Canadian Paragliding Nationals in Pemberton
Competition brings top pilots from 15 different countries! PEMBERTON, BC, July 4 - The Canadian Paragliding Nationals 2017 is taking place in Pemberton from July 22-29. The event is hosted by Sea to Sky Paragliding, and is bringing up to 120 pilots from across Canada and around the world. Current registered participants represent 15 different countries, including: Canada, USA, New Zealand, Nepal, Argentina, Mexico, and more! Paragliding is the adventure sport of flying lightweight paragliders: foot-launched glider aircraft with no rigid primary structure. The pilot sits in a harness suspended below a fabric wing comprising a large number of interconnected baffled cells. Despite not using an engine, paraglider flights can last many hours and cover hundreds of kilometers. Paragliding competitions are much like a sailing race; there is a start point, a set course to travel along and a finish line. A paragliding race is three-dimensional, and uses waypoints or GPS coordinates. It is expected that about two thirds of the pilots "sink out" along the course, only the top pilots make goal at the end of each task. Contestants are scored on the distance and time of their daily flights. Tasks generally run from 3-6 hours over a course-line from 50-120km. The pilot with the best overall score wins the competition. This is an 8-day event with a practice day and 7 task days that make up the competition. Public is invited to find a local patio or balcony to watch this event from anywhere around town. Access to upper launch in Mt. Mackenzie will be strictly limited to participants, staff and registered media. The sport is weather dependant and there may be no-fly days when conditions are too rough. This is a National 'A' competition for the purpose of Canadian ranking and FAI category 2 sanctioned to qualify for Canadian NTSS points. The competition has 4 divisions or classes: Sport (up to EN C), Serial (up to EN D), Competition (up to CCC), and Female. Current paragliding records in the Pemberton Valley : FAI Triangle 197.6km, Out and Return 199.4km, Straight Line 170.6km.
